London Walking Tours

Our Guides

We have never wished to employ ‘work-a-day’ tour hosts that recite verbatim from a pre-arranged script. What appeals to us is a new concept in Tour Guided walks – this is street entertainment at it’s best. London Walking Tours is all about people, stories and the great city in which we live – it’s the people that have the passion and love of their chosen subjects.

All of our current guides not only possess a considerable depth of knowledge of their relevant areas, some being published authors, lecturers and broadcasters, they are also interesting people with backgrounds in publishing, television, historical research and local history.

Richard still conducts a large number of our tours but he works with a team of handpicked freelance guides, all of whom have been studying the areas of local interest such as the Jack the Ripper case for years, and all of whom are up to speed on every twist and turn of this and other  world-famous murder mysteries. The guides have been chosen, not just for their knowledge on the case, but also for their ability to present the facts in an entertaining way that will keep you gripped from start to finish. They too have regularly appeared on The Discovery and History Channels being interviewed about the Jack the Ripper murders. They constantly carry out up to date research into the murders and so you are guaranteed that with our Jack the Ripper tour you be getting the latest and most accurate information on the case. So don't be disappointed, ensure that you book your Jack the Ripper Tour with an organisation that offers you small intimate groups and guides who really know their subject.

Richard Jones
The Jack the Ripper walk was started in 1982 by author and TV historian Richard Jones. Richard has written 16 best - selling books including the soon to be published UNCOVERING JACK THE RIPPER'S LONDON. He is featured on the DVD that accompanies the Johnny Depp film FROM HELL, for which he took the crew around the Jack the Ripper murder sites and on which he provides an insight and opinion into the history of Jack the Ripper. He appeared on the History Channel's THE HUNT FOR JACK THE RIPPER and on Channel 5's DIVINE DESIGNS,  on which programme he is seen talking about the historical aspects of the Jack the Ripper case in relation to the streets of Spitalfields. In 2004 he wrote, produced and presented the acclaimed Drama Documentary UNMASKING JACK THE RIPPER, which, according to  Ripperologist Magazine, 'reconstructs the main points of the Ripper story with skill, seamlessly weaving dramatic reconstructions, narration and interviews with experts in a lively way that keeps this well-trodden story fresh and interesting. Perhaps the best...[Jack the Ripper]...documentary to have been produced in recent years;’ and of which Stephen Ryder who operates the webs largest Jack the Ripper site Casebook.org wrote 'I'm not a big fan of Ripper documentaries, admittedly, but I have to say that Richard's is certainly one of the best - if not the best - I've ever seen. None of the same old tired clichés you get in the run-of-the-mill docs I'm sure we're all familiar with. I'd recommend it.' In addition to regular appearances on BBC Breakfast News; ITV's This Morning and London Tonight; Richard frequently appears on Living TV's and the Travel Channel's hugely successful programmes MOST HAUNTED LIVE and GHOST TOWNS. Martin Fido, co-author of the Ripperologists bible The Jack the Ripper A - Z had this to say about Richard's knowledge of the case; [Richard Jones is able to present] "a detailed and perfect account of the more historical complex theories... I doubt whether any other guide in London ...could have done this. The tours that Richard Jones leads are excellent..."

Mark Ubsdell
Mark has been producing features on London for the international film and television market since 1985 and was a founding member of what is now the largest film promotion house outside of LA. He has several major movies and tv documentaries under his belt. It is this combination of history and movie technology that makes our tours so unique and exciting.

Jenny Phillips
Local historian and researcher who has studied under Professor xxxx and has an extraordinarily profound knowledge of London and the street history. Her presentation style is inimitable and she has become a popular favourite with London walkers, parties and tours.

At London Walking Tours we believe that local and historical knowledge and the ability to entertain is determined by the knowledge, enthusiasm and passion of the guide.
