London Walking Tours

Jack the Ripper Fact File

A JOURNEY INTO TERROR

Throughout the dark autumn nights of 1888 the streets of London's East End were terrorised by a murderous fiend whom history would come to remember as Jack the Ripper. His sinister reign of terror lasted from 31st August to 9th November, a period of around 12 weeks. Yet the ramifications of those twelve bloody weeks still echo down the centuries and have helped make Jack the Ripper the world's most famous serial killer.

On this truly eerie walk we lead you away from the busy, bustling main roads, and escort you into the very streets where the story of Jack the Ripper unfolded.

We take you step by bloodcurdling step through a warren of backstreets where Victorian London will spring vividly to life. Here in this dark hinterland of the unknown metropolis you will literally feel the shadows close around you, as your guide begins the story of the infamous Whitechapel Murders.

You will picture the Victorian police as they hunt the Ripper through the cobblestone streets through which you pass. And so skilled will be the narrative of your guide be that, as one recent Jack the Ripper Walk participant put it, "you can just feel that you're walking alongside them!"

You will see the site of what, at the time, was believed to be the first of Jack the Ripper's murders.

You will twist and turn through a warren of 18th century streets that have changed little since the days of Jack the Ripper.

This will bring you to the site of the second Jack the Ripper murder when Annie Chapman was found horribly mutilated in the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street. It was with her murder that the disquiet in the area gave way to outright terror and panic. Your guide's commentary will capture that panic as you feel your heart beat faster and your pace quicken, lest the shadows claim you.

Onwards now and forward to the scene of the final Jack the Ripper murder, before we turn our attention to the night of the double murder, the night on which the police came closest to catching Jack the Ripper.

We will point out the very doorway in which the ONLY clue that Jack the Ripper left behind was discovered. Here you will see the wall on which the killer may have scrawled a sinister message as he fled the scene of one of his most brutal and gruesome murders.

We will tell you of the major suspects including the one that the two highest ranking officers on the case believed was Jack the Ripper.

We will follow in the footsteps of Catherine Eddowes, Jack the Ripper's fourth victim,. We will follow the trail she took from what was then known as 'Prostitute Island,' to the corner where she was seen with Jack the Ripper shortly before her body was discovered in Mitre Square.

You will hear the full history of the Jack the Ripper murders, and find out fact after fascinating fact as you wander through some of the capital's most atmospheric and least changed streets.

So join the experts on a Jack the Ripper tour that is steeped in history and on which with every step taken you will move closer to that long ago era of gaslight and terror, when a lone figure stalking the night shadows, really did succeed in shaking the Victorian establishment to its very core.

Testimonial

Whilst a contributor to Ripper Notes one of the leading journals on Ripper studies had this to say about Richard's knowledge of the case and presentation skills.
Richard,
I just wanted to congratulate you on a DVD that way exceeded my expectations. You are an exceptional writer and orator. You obviously went all out on this DVD... I understand you have a book coming out on the Ripper case. I cannot wait to read it. No doubt it will be one of the most well-written ever on the case.  If I can free up some time, I'll be writing a review of your DVD for Ripper Notes. Expect some serious praise.  I thought you were very well-balanced on your handling of the case.  While you clearly prefer Kosminski (or someone like him) you didn't force that view down the audience's throats. I could go on, but I'll stop here.  You've made a real achievement here and I'm looking forward to more output from you.
