A city Pub Walk
(This provisional itinerary illustrate just one of the walks featured in our coming Pub Walks itinerary)
Gordon’s Villier’s street.
The most atmospheric and eccentric wine bar you’ll ever visit.
Left into Villier’s street and on to Watergate walk.
The Duke of Bukcingham’s Watergate
Before the 1862 construction of the Victoria embankment, this gateway marked the river’s high tide.
The Site of Samuel Pepys’s house in Buckingham street.
Return to John Adam street and onto the Strand then William IV Street and Chandos Place.
The Marquis of Granby Pub dating from the reign of Charles II and known then as ‘the hole in the wall’. We move on to St Martin’s Lane and The Salisbury Pub which gained fame for the bareknuckle prize fights that took place here.
Goodwins Court is an almost perfectly preserved 18th Century street flickering with gaslight at night.
Take a look inside Arthur Middleton’s on New Row, and see centuries old scientific instruments then onwards to the; Lamb and Flag in Rose Street, a wood framed building that survived the Great Fire of 1666 and a favourite haunt of Charles Dickens.
As we approach Covent Garden Long Acre one of the busiest parts of this section of London and the approach to Bow Street magistrates court wher the Bow Street runners were established London’s first permanent police force. Enjoy the spectacle of the Royal Opera House with it’s flamboyant architecture and on to The Theatre Royal Drury Lane one of the oldest theatres in London and the Lyceum theatre. Enjoy the lavish spectacle of the Savoy and hear it’s colourful history before moving to our last watering hole the; Coal Hole on the Strand established in the early 19th century for the coal haulers which has a surprising tale to tell about London’s theatreland. Our tour ends in Covent Garden Market where Professor Higgins met the flower seller Eliza Doolittle.
A number of pubs litter the square and any one of these would make a fine choice for ending your historical walk. Cheers!
