London Walking Tours

Ghostly Hampstead by Night Fact File

There has been a settlement in Hampstead for over a 1000 years. Much of the walk is spent crossing Hampstead Heath, which even today can be lonely, desolate and, if the conditions are right, quite frightening. Highlights include the eerie overgrown pathways of St John’s Church and a chance to unwind and seek out the ghosts at the splendid Spaniards Inn, once a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin.

This is London’s most famous suburb. It gained its fame as a 17th and 18th Century spa resort now it is the home to celebrity and the wealthier sections of British Society.  Situated on a ridge overlooking the City of London and the Thames, Hampstead is centred on a heath made up of 785 acres of wild royal parkland in the centre of North London. By the 18th century, the spas had fallen into decay but the heath was happily dedicated forever to the use of the public by a special act of Parliament in 1872. It became the favourite playground of the Londoner the ‘Appy Ampstead’ legend of the cockney was born.  City dwellers came here to ‘avoid’ London, just as they do now. It attracted luminaries and visionaries such as Constable , Keats and a host of others. Enjoy the village.
